From Russia With Love

The Russian name Karabagh derives from a compound meaning
Turkick: Kara= black and Iranian: Bagh= garden. Literally “black garden.” Generally these antique rugs have rose pattered flowers, geometric in form with a pink and red color palette. The flowers are often arranged in swags, gardens or bouquets on a dark blue or black field. Very early Karabagh rugs were woven with a bright magenta field which was considered too strong for Western buyers. This was changed by a chemical process using iron oxides to create a dark black brown field causing oxidation. This results in a high low texture on antique Karabagh rugs.
