![]() To an untrained eye there may not be a noticeable difference between many Oriental rugs. The time and place of a rug's creation determines its authenticity and value. 1
Hand knotted rugs have yarns that are knotted around warps running the length of the rug. A rug with more knots per square inch will typically be more valuable than one with less knots per square inch. 2
A flat woven rug does not use knots to determine its shape. Warp strands are passed through the horizontal strands which form the foundation of the rug (these strands are called "the weft"). They may be passed through on a loom or by hand. Dye types 1
If the dye type is synthetic then the rug will not be over 150 years old.2
If the dye type is natural then the rug may be as old as 3,000 years!3
Old Indian rugs may have a deep red dye made from the dried bodies of insects. This dye may be referred to as "cochineal".Styles from different geographies. While there are too many styles to enumerate here, examples of styles unique to certain areas include:
